From Knowledge to Application

What if a student can remember a formula, reproduce a definition, and write the right answer in an examination—but struggles to apply that knowledge to a real-life situation? The answer lies in understanding what learning truly means.
The real test of learning often begins when there is no familiar question, ready-made answer, or textbook example to follow. It is in these moments that students are encouraged to think independently, make connections, apply their knowledge, and find their own way forward.
From Knowing to Doing
Education today is moving beyond simply knowing toward understanding, applying, analysing, and creating. At the heart of CBSE’s competency-based approach is a simple yet powerful idea: students should not only know what something means, but also understand how and when to use it.
Consider an English classroom where students have just read a story. A conventional question might ask, “Describe the main character.” A competency-based question, however, could ask, “If this character faced a similar situation today, what might they do differently? Give reasons for your answer.”
The first question checks whether a student can recall details from the story. The second encourages the student to interpret, connect, reason, and express an informed opinion. This is the essence of competency-based learning—moving from knowing something to knowing how to use it meaningfully.
From Experience to Understanding
This is also where experiential learning becomes significant. Experiments, discussions, projects, problem-solving activities, creative tasks, and collaborative experiences allow students to transform knowledge into experience and experience into deeper understanding.
Nurturing Learners for Tomorrow
At Birla High School Mukundapur, learning extends beyond textbooks, creating opportunities for students to question, explore, collaborate, create, and apply their learning in meaningful ways. The school’s approach reflects an understanding that education is not simply about knowing the answer—it is about knowing what to do with what you know.
At Birla High School Mukundapur, we nurture learners who go beyond knowing—to understanding, applying, creating, and growing.
