India is a land of myriad cultures, and our religious festivals and folklore reflect our real essence. Festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Eid, Christmas, and Pongal are celebrated with great enthusiasm, each having deep historical or mythological roots.
Homecoming
We have just bid adieu to our goddess Ma Durga and her children after four days of festivity, pomp, glitter and grandeur with rain being spoilsport on a few occasions. It is the time for homecoming. We are reminded of young Phatik in Tagore’s story, who pines to go back to his village during Durga puja .Though our economic needs drive us away from our roots ,the soul yearns to rejoice and be a part of this unique celebration. Diwali, popularly regarded as the festival of lights, is believed to dispel the gloom and darkness that hinders our path to progress.
Folktale
It is believed that once, the winged insects viz.housefly and moth wanted the Almighty to proclaim which one was superior to the other. God gave them a test. They had to travel the land the entire day and come back to give information about all the sources of light they might come across. The very next day,the housefly returned, proudly stating it had seen a hearth, a funeral pyre, volcanoes and household lamps.Strangely the moth never returned. The lesson we learn is that one who has imbibed the true light of knowledge will never turn to darkness. As competent faculty it is our responsibility to provide value based education as mandated by CBSE curriculum through insightful and philosophical discussions.
Takeaways
Festivals not only bring people together in joyous gatherings, but they also preserve India’s intangible heritage by keeping ancient stories alive. At BHS-M,we believe that by experientially learning about these festivities, through cultural programmes organised in school, our young minds can realise the importance of unity, gratitude, and respect for tradition. Thus, Indian festivals and folklore are vital in maintaining the social and cultural fabric of the nation and fostering a sense of belonging across generations of learners.
